STAFF PROFILE
Yanda Zhang, Ph.D.
Associate Director
- Engineering

Dr. Zhang is a
Technical Associate Director at the Heschong Mahone Group, Inc. His work
includes building energy science research, technical evaluation of
industrial and food processing technologies, building and appliance
energy efficiency standards development, and utility program evaluation
and policy support.
Dr. Zhang currently
leads several projects in areas of hot water heating research, codes and
standards (C&S) development, emerging technologies performance
assessment, and C&S Program evaluation. He is managing the CEC PIER
Research on Multifamily Hot Water Distribution Systems. He is leading a
research team to conduct field performance study at more than 30
multifamily buildings, to develop hot water system models, and to
provide best design practice recommendations to the industry and code
change suggestions to the CEC. He is overseeing Title 20 CASE studies on
commercial clothes dryers, gas radiant heater, and commercial convection
oven. He has been providing policy analysis, program design, and
program evaluation support to the California IOU C&S programs. He is
conducting field performance assessment of a wastewater treatment
technology and has finished field performance assessment of two other
PG&E emerging technology assessment projects on food processing
technologies. He is leading the effort in developing Title 24 C&S
program change theories to support CPUC evaluation of 2005 and 2008 IOU
C&S programs. He conducted program assessment and design of the PG&E
C&S compliance enhancement program.
Prior to joining HMG, Dr. Zhang worked at GE Energy conducting
engineering and economic analysis on energy efficiency technologies,
leading product improvement and managing project delivery; and providing
consultation to utility companies. He developed economic models and
software tools that quantitatively demonstrated benefits of energy
efficiency technologies, and proposed and patented (pending) a new
algorithm for evaluating performance degradation induced economic
impact.
Dr Zhang holds a PhD from the University of Davis where he
worked as a research assistant, studied air pollution control
technologies and developed advanced optical diagnostic systems to detect
air pollutants. His work led to several publications in peer-reviewed
journals that could benefit industrial applications.
