HMG has conducted the first large-scale
US field study of energy savings from daylight-responsive lighting
controls (photocontrols) in commercial buildings that are lit by windows
(sidelit spaces).
The aim was to determine how much energy
is actually being saved, and whether any characteristics of the
building, the control system or its commissioning lead to more or less
successful outcomes.
The study found a wide variety of
characteristics that are statistically associated with successful
photocontrols. These characteristics included the type of building, the
size, height and transmittance of the windows, the design of the control
system, and whether the occupants were trained to use the system.
This information can give designers,
program managers and commissioning agents the tools to influence design
at an earlier stage, and achieve the greatest daylight energy savings
and the best-functioning buildings for their clients.
